ISO 41001:2018
Facility Management

ISO 41001:2018 specifies requirements for a facility management (FM) system when an organization:

a) should show and prove efficient and effective facility management that supports the goals and requirements of the organization;

b) aims to consistently meet the needs of interested parties and applicable requirements;

c) aims for sustainability in a globally competitive environment.

Specification

The requirements set out in ISO 41001:2018 are specific to the FM sector and are intended to apply to all organizations or parts thereof, whether public or private sector, and regardless of the type, size and nature of the organization or geographical location.

Increasingly complex, the global facilities management (FM) market will be worth $1 trillion by 2025 – and that’s just what’s being recognized. FM is a discipline that needs to balance the rapidly changing needs and demands of various stakeholders to serve efficient, secure and sustainable business needs. This affects the health and well-being of all those who meet the organization and covers a wide range of areas including occupancy costs (the second highest overhead in almost any organization), space utilization, maintenance, safety, cleanliness, environment and more.

ISO 41001 – Requirements with instructions for use, published in April 2018, with the purpose of FM teams achieving optimal efficiency. Relying on international best practice, the new standardized management system represents a benchmark for the development and management of an effective strategic, tactical and operational FM regime. The standard will also help organizations looking to outsource FM, as those service providers who are able to demonstrate compliance with the standard will provide them with assurance regarding their approach and processes. The chairman of the ISO technical committee that developed the standard said that ISO 41001 help organizations in multiple ways by establishing a common approach to a set of processes that can be implemented worldwide.

“Every organization, large or small, has some element of facilities management. It is a complex discipline that directly affects everyone, as it is about the spaces we occupy and how those spaces meet the needs of the people who use them every day.

“ISO 41001 is the first standard of its kind for facilities management and has the potential to make a real difference to organisations by improving the health and safety of the workforce, reducing their impact on the environment and making significant savings and efficiencies.
